Install Multiple Virtual Machine Operating Systems
This article is intended to present a brief overview of the concept of virtual machines and how to install VMware Workstation 3.0 virtual machine software in Windows XP and Linux. Red Hat 7.1. The article also hopes to share experiences sharing on how to install Windows XP and Red Hat 7.1 in a virtual machine environment. WHAT IS A VIRTUAL MACHINE? You are a lover of learning, learning. You want to test a new operating system (OS) that does not want to affect the operating system is using. You have an interesting piece of software but do not run on the current OS. You want to install multiple operating systems on one PC in the simplest way. You are a programmer and are eager to try out the program you write on different platforms. You want to run network applications on your non-networked PC. You can do all of this by creating virtual machines on a single computer. The question is what is a Virtual Machine (VM)? A VM is a software environment that allows one or more operating systems and applications to run in parallel on a single computer. It is interesting that we can switch between running operating systems in just one or two operations without having to restart the PC. For the OS, there is no difference between a VM and a real computer. In short, the VM is a true copy of the PC. Almost, what you can do on the real machine, you can also do on the VM. When using VMs for different operating systems, you need to grasp some of the following key concepts:
  • Virtual machine (VM): is a PC created by software virtual machine emulator.
  • Host (host machine): The PC on which you installed the VM software. AzSoft_watermark_big.png AzSoft_watermark_small.png cong-nghe? Figure 2: XP in RH INSTALLING SOFTWARE FOR VIRUSES The VM software I introduced in this article is Vmware Workstation 3.0 (http://www.vmware.com/). All of the examples below apply to the installation file downloaded from the address above. You can get to this address to find out more information and download this software. However, there are 3 notes before you want to do anything: VMware Workstation 3.0 has 2 versions: Windows (12 MB); Version for Linux (9.23 MB) This software is not free. You must provide an e-mail address to receive a temporary registration number using this software for 30 days. Your PC must be strong enough and the hard disk has enough space to install additional operating systems. According to Vmware, minimum configuration for Vmware Workstation 3.0 to work in Windows XP (XP) and Red Had 7.1 (RH) is:
  • CPU: 266 MHz (supports only Intel Pentium II, III, 4 and ADM Athlon)
  • RAM: 128 MB (must have sufficient RAM to run the server plus the number of RAM divided by each guest operating system)
  • Video card: 256 colors (8 bits). The Linux server requires a video card that must be supported by XFree86
  • Hard disk: 20 MB for Vmware Workstation and 500 MB for each operating system
  • Install the VMware Workstation 3.0 in XP
Note that Vmware Workstation 3.0 for Windows can be installed on most Microsoft operating systems. In this article, I would like to guide you through the installation of this virtual machine in a Windows XP environment. Once you have downloaded the VMwareWorkstation-3.0.0-1455.exe file, you are logged on to gain administrative privileges and then proceed to normal installation as for other software. You can select OK with most of the notifications appearing on the screen, because you can completely reconfigure VmwareWorkstation after the installation is complete. There is one point to keep in mind when you see a dialog asking if you want to rename the virtual disk file on the server to 1 AzSoft_watermark_big.png AzSoft_watermark_small.png cong-nghe?p=1 des.txt en_metadesc.txt en_name.txt getpageinfo.sh getpagelink.sh imglink.txt imglist.txt img.quantrimang.com label:Some Text link_original.txt link.txt log.txt meta_desc.txt name.txt news t-142619 testimg2-0.jpg testimg2-1.jpg testimg2.jpg testimg3.jpg testimg.jpg thumb tim-hieu-excel-2016-200.jpg title_vn.txt tmp02.html tmp03.html tmp2.html tmpdesc2.txt tmpdesc3.txt tmpdesc4.txt tmpdesc5.txt tmpdesc6.txt tmpdesc7.txt tmpdesc.txt tmp.html tmpresult.txt tmptrans.txt transresult.txt wm.quantrimang.com www.mailenable.com www.microsoft.com .vdmk, then you should choose the Search command to find the file and if so, make changes as suggested. If you have ever installed Vmware Workstation 2.0 then you probably do not have to make the changes mentioned above, but also rename the 1 AzSoft_watermark_big.png AzSoft_watermark_small.png cong-nghe?p=1 des.txt en_metadesc.txt en_name.txt getpageinfo.sh getpagelink.sh imglink.txt imglist.txt img.quantrimang.com label:Some Text link_original.txt link.txt log.txt meta_desc.txt name.txt news t-142619 testimg2-0.jpg testimg2-1.jpg testimg2.jpg testimg3.jpg testimg.jpg thumb tim-hieu-excel-2016-200.jpg title_vn.txt tmp02.html tmp03.html tmp2.html tmpdesc2.txt tmpdesc3.txt tmpdesc4.txt tmpdesc5.txt tmpdesc6.txt tmpdesc7.txt tmpdesc.txt tmp.html tmpresult.txt tmptrans.txt transresult.txt wm.quantrimang.com www.mailenable.com www.microsoft.com .std file (save the VM's pause status) to 1 AzSoft_watermark_big.png AzSoft_watermark_small.png cong-nghe?p=1 des.txt en_metadesc.txt en_name.txt getpageinfo.sh getpagelink.sh imglink.txt imglist.txt img.quantrimang.com label:Some Text link_original.txt link.txt log.txt meta_desc.txt name.txt news t-142619 testimg2-0.jpg testimg2-1.jpg testimg2.jpg testimg3.jpg testimg.jpg thumb tim-hieu-excel-2016-200.jpg title_vn.txt tmp02.html tmp03.html tmp2.html tmpdesc2.txt tmpdesc3.txt tmpdesc4.txt tmpdesc5.txt tmpdesc6.txt tmpdesc7.txt tmpdesc.txt tmp.html tmpresult.txt tmptrans.txt transresult.txt wm.quantrimang.com www.mailenable.com www.microsoft.com .vmss. The above changes are especially necessary to avoid conflicts with XP's System Restore feature. Figure 3: VMware Workstation in XP Unlike many other softwares which attempt to complete the installation without having to restart XP, VmwareWorkstation 3.0 requires the server OS to be restarted and the installation is successful. Install VmwareWorkstation 3.0 in RH 7.1 Before installing VmwareWorkstation 3.0 in RH 7.1, you need to note that this software has two versions for Linux installation. The first is VMwareWorkstation-3.0.0-1455.tar.gz and the second is VMwareWorkstation-3.0.0-1455.rpm. In essence, these two versions are no different. They only require a little installation. In this section, I would like to explain how to install both versions of RH 7.1. The installation process can be done in the terminal window of the text environment (Graphic Mode) or graphics (Graphic Mode). In my opinion, you should install Vmware Workstation in GNOME's Xwindow graphical environment or KDE. If you are unfamiliar with RH directory transfer, type [mc] to run Midnight Commander - a DOS-like utility. Here are the steps. The statements have no []: Figure 4: Terminal window From the prompt in the Terminal window, type [su] to log into Root for system administrator privileges. Navigate to the directory containing the installation files. In case this file is on CD then you have to use [mount] command To open the CD-ROM drive (in Xwindow, just click the CD-ROM drive icon). If you install from the RPM, just type the following command: [rpm -Uhv VMwareWorkstation-3.0.0-1455.rpm] If you use TAR.GZ then you should copy this installation file to a temporary folder on the hard drive, suppose as [tmp] to make the installation process more convenient. To copy the file from the installation file, type the command [cp VMwareWorkstation-3.0.0-1455.tar.gz / tmp] . Then go to [/ tmp] with the [cd / tmp] command to unzip the file. To unzip, type [tar zxf VMwareWorkstation-3.0.0-1455.tar.gz]. In Xwindow, you can use the Achiver utility (similar to Winzip). Continue typing [cd vmware-distrib] to move to the newly unzipped folder. To start the installation, type [./vmware-install.pl]. Figure 5: The installation process starts After this process, if you install from the RPM, you have to run the [vmware-config.pl] file to set the necessary configuration. If you use TAR.GZ you do not have to do this, because the installer did this for you when you answered YES from the prompt on the screen. From now on you can get quite a lot of questions from the installer. In my opinion, you should accept the default values suggested by the program as most of them can be reconfigured after a successful installation. Note that you can ignore the settings for the DHCP server by pressing the Spacebar and then Q. When the installation process is complete, a successful message will appear on the screen. If you do not receive this message, you will need to repeat the installation steps above. Figure 6: Installation successful CREATE VIRUS AND SCREEN ON XP Create a virtual machine Just select Next with most of the notifications on the screen. The VM creation steps are as follows: Start VMware Workstation and select New Virtual Machine. If this is your first time running Vmware Workstation, you will be asked to enter the license code that Vmware provides you via e-mail or on a CD. In the New Virtual Machine dialog box, you will have three options. Typical: Create a VM with the most common configuration and device options. Custom: Create a virtual machine with specific configuration options. Vmware Guest OS Kit: Microsoft's operating system with special support features is pre-installed. Choose Typical or Custom. Figure 7: Select configuration Selecting a client operating system is Linux. Select a name for the VM and the location where the VM files will be saved. Distributed RAM for the client. If the amount of RAM is not missing, you should accept the suggestion of VMware Workstation 6. Configure the network for the virtual machine. There will be 4 options.
  • Use Bridged Networking: Allows the client OS to directly access the Ethernet network
  • Use network address translation: Allows the client OS to access the network as well as other machines in the network accessing the client, via the server (using the server's IP address).
  • Use host-only networking: does not allow doing things that use the Network Address Translation permission. Virtual machines are connected to the server through a virtual private network.
  • Do not use a network: Allows the VM to be completely isolated from the host and the network. Select the "hard disk" for the VM. The program introduces 3 options
  • Create New Virtual Disk: VMWare Workstation will create a virtual disk file on the server and use this file as the hard disk for the virtual machine. The information stored on the hard disk of the virtual machine is actually stored in this file.
  • Use An Existing Virtual Disk: Select this mode if you want to reuse an existing virtual disk
  • Use a Physical Disk: Select this mode to use a hard disk partition on the server as the VM's hard disk. If your PC has two or more operating systems on different partitions, this mode will allow you to have no dual boot. You choose Create New Virtual Disk.
  • Select the hard disk space for the VM. The recommended size here is the maximum possible size of the VM hard disk. When newly created, this disk is very small (only a few hundred kilobytes), but it will expand as guest operating systems and applications are installed.
Select Finish to complete the VM creation process Install Red Hat 7.1 on the Windows XP server The installation of RH on the VM in the XP environment should be done from the installation CD of this OS. In general, the steps are as normal as when installing RH on a real PC. Here are the differences: 1. After successfully creating the VM, insert the RH 7.1 installation disc into the CD-ROM drive and press the Power on button on the toolbar in the VMware Workstation program window. to boot the VM. Figure 8: Starting the VM Like a real PC, the VM will scan all bootable devices, and then initialize the RH installation from the CD. You should set RH in Text Mode. If you press Enter, the installer will automatically switch to Text Mode. Perform a normal installation based on the instructions on the screen. Figure 9: RH is being installed on the VM in XP When you see a message about a Bad Partition Table and ask for a fix with scary alerts for losing data, keep calm. Actually no matter how serious happens when installed on real PC. Simply put, virtual disks need to be formatted and partitioned. You should select the automatic partition creation mode when the Automatic Partitioning screen appears. Figure 10: Notice of broken partition table Select Default for Video Card. The XWindows configuration steps should be performed quickly by default, and there is no need to try the settings for XWindows. You do not have to worry about the graphical mode of GNOME and KDE. VMware Workstation will provide a utility called VMware Tools to help you do this later. After the installation finishes successfully, the VM will reboot and load the Linux RH OS (otherwise press the Power on button). The task now is to install the monitor driver for the VM. The steps are as follows (the commands are without the []]: Figure 11: RH boot on VM - Select Settings - VMware Tools Install in the VMware Workstation window on XP - Log in to the system with the name and password you created during the RH installation. From the prompt in the VM's Terminal window, type [su] for system administrator privileges. Figure 12: Login to the system - By default this installation file is compressed and located on the virtual CD-ROM drive of the VM. You should copy it to the [/ tmp] directory. Specifically, you type the following commands:
  • [mount -t iso9660 / dev / cdrom / mnt]: Let the virtual CD-ROM drive work.
  • [cp /mnt/vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz / tmp]: to copy the file to the [/ tmp] directory.
  • [umount / dev / cdrom]: Let the virtual CD-ROM drive pause.
- Undelete and install. The statements are as follows:
  • [cd / tmp]: to move to [/ tmp].
  • [zmf-vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz]: to unzip the installation file.
  • [cd vmware-linux-tools]: to move to the directory where the files are to be decompressed.
  • [./install.pl]: to run the VMware Tool installation file
You can now safely start Xwindow from the command [startx] to GNOME or KDE. The VMware Tool also has some interesting features. You can find out by typing [vmware-toolbox & amp;] from the prompt in the Terminal window CREATE A COMPUTER AND SET UP XP ON RH COMPUTER Create Virtual Machines As mentioned above, VMs work with the same mechanism as a real PC. To proceed with creating the VM, do the following: Type [vmware & amp;] command from the prompt in the Terminal window (You do not need to log into Root). Figure 13: Creating the VM in RH If this is your first time running Vmware Workstation, you will be asked to do two things:

Although these files exist only if you have installed VMware Workstation 2.0 earlier. However, you should agree to the program requirements. Select Run the configuration wizard in the Configuration Wizard.
The remaining steps are similar to the steps for creating a VM in a Windows XP-based server (see above). The only downside is that you have to enable the CD-ROM drive and the floppy drive to work. Install Windows XP on the Red Hat 7.1 server. The installation of XP on the VM in the RH environment should be done from the installation CD of this operating system. In general, the steps are as normal when installing XP on a real PC. Here, I just mentioned the points worth mentioning:
  • Run the RH operating system, type [startx] into the GNOME or KDE desktop environment
  • Open Terminal and type [vmware & amp;] command to start VMware Workstation
  • Insert the XP installation CD into the CD-ROM drive, and then click the Power on button on the VMware Workstation toolbar
  • The installation of XP on the VM from the CD-ROM drive is as normal as on a real PC. You do not have to worry about the virtual disk format, and answer "No" when the installer asks if you want to automatically set the resolution and the number of colors.
Figure 14: Installing XP on the VM in RH
  • After XP has restarted, select Settings - VMware Tools Install on the VMware Workstation toolbar to install the monitor driver for this guest operating system. The remaining steps are performed on the virtual machine. The VMware Tool installer automatically prompts you to install, and follow the instructions on the screen. It is possible that XP will report incompatibility. You do not have to bother, just keep going. If for some reason the installer does not start automatically, you can open it from the VM's virtual CD-ROM drive by selecting [Start - Run - D: VmwareTools.exe]
